Meet the Provost

Welcome from the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs

Augustine Agho

I am pleased to welcome you to Old Dominion University's Academic Affairs website, a gateway to learning more about our academic programs and educational practices, as well as our efforts to promote excellence in all that we do. Our vision in Academic Affairs is to create an innovative, inclusive, and globally-focused learning environment for faculty, staff, and students. We achieve this vision by hiring the most talented and diverse faculty and staff, educating our undergraduate and graduate students, and engaging with the local, regional, national, and international communities.

ODU's faculty and staff includes outstanding teachers, scientists, researchers, and experts in a variety of academic disciplines and technical fields, all of whom are enthusiastically committed to providing undergraduate and graduate students with top-quality education they will need to live and work in an increasingly interdependent and culturally diverse world.

"Our vision in Academic Affairs is to create an innovative, inclusive, and globally-focused learning environment for faculty, staff, and students."

As Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, I am responsible for working with the President, other Vice Presidents, and faculty leaders to set academic priorities for ODU's Norfolk main campus and its Virginia Beach, Peninsula, and Tri-Cities Higher Education Centers. Other major responsibilities include: development and delivery of quality undergraduate and graduate educational programs, through on-line, face-to-face, or blended learning modes; development and implementation of inclusive policies relating to the recruitment, retention and success of faculty and staff in Academic Affairs; development and allocation of resources to foster excellence and innovation in faculty and student engagement in research and scholarly activities; enhancement of opportunities for collaboration with industry and state and federal agencies; advancement of ODU's cultural and artistic endeavors, and community engagement; development of international partnerships for students and faculty; maintenance of accreditation from regional and national oversight accrediting agencies; and overseeing and supporting the University Libraries.

The administrative faculty and staff of Academic Affairs work closely with ODU's Office of Research to support the successful operation of research programs, and with the Offices of Development, Budget and Finance, and others to ensure sound financial management for ODU's academic offerings. We also work closely with the Division of Student Engagement and Enrollment Services on the University's Student Success Initiative, and together we develop and implement strategies promoting student achievement. We work as well with ODU's Faculty Senate to strengthen the graduate and undergraduate curricula, provide professional development opportunities for our faculty, and develop and implement policies and practices based on ideals of shared governance.

Thank you for your interest in the work of the Office of Academic Affairs. Please browse our web pages and other ODU Web pages to learn more about our efforts to promote excellence in all we do to support our students, faculty, staff, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the world. You'll find not only a broad array of interesting academic programs and learning opportunities, but also a sense of community and an engagement in learning that permeates our entire university.
