  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Must be in good academic standing with a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA

  • To a student(s) seeking a degree in teaching education and/or licensure and has been fully admitted into a Teacher Education Program,
  • The student(s) must be a Virginia resident qualifying for in-state tuition,
  • The scholarship will be based on financial need,
  • The scholarship may be awarded to student(s) who are full or part-time, on-campus or through Distance Learning,
  • Once the cost of tuition, fees and books are met for the first student, an additional scholarship will be awarded.

Ejner Emil ‘Karl’ Karlsen Graduate Scholarship in Education  

  • To a student(s) seeking a graduate degree from the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies,
  • The student(s) must be a Virginia resident qualifying for in-state tuition,
  • The scholarship will be based on financial need,
  • The scholarship may be awarded to student(s) who are full or part-time, on-campus or through Distance Learning,
  • Once the cost of tuition, fees and books are met for the first student, an additional scholarship will be awarded.
  • Nominations may be made by faculty members within the Darden College of Education and selection will be made by the Dean

The Higginbotham Endowed Scholarship Fund 

  • Student in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies who has met the requirements to enter into the teacher candidate internship at either the graduate or undergraduate level,
  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid,
  • Full- time student,
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0

The J. Frank Sellew Memorial Scholarship in Education  

  • Must meet all teacher education admission standards,
  • Student must be enrolled in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies,
  • Must be full-time undergraduate,
  • Must have a cumulative GPA of 3.0

The Nybakken-Graves Scholarship  

  • Full-time undergraduate or graduate student admitted into an approved teacher education program at ODU,
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5,
  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid,
  • Parent or Legal guardian graduated from an approved teacher education program at ODU and is licensed or certified as a current professional educator (i.e. teacher, school counselor, principal, speech pathologist or other professional educator), as identified by DCEPS,
  • Preference will be given to the student who resides in the Hampton Roads area, but parent does not need to reside in HR.

The Annabel & Hal Sacks. Family Endowed Scholarship 

  • The scholarship will be awarded to a student in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies who has met the requirements to enter the teacher candidate internship at either the graduate or undergraduate level,
  • The scholarship will be based on greatest financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid,
  • If there is ever a time when the scholarship candidates' needs are equal, the scholarship is to be awarded to the student with the highest GPA,
  • The scholarship is to be awarded to a full-time student taking classes on campus,
  • Once the cost of tuition is met for the first student, an additional scholarship may be awarded.

The Strong Scholars Program Scholarship  

  • Undergraduate or Graduate student,
  • Demonstrated financial need,
  • Must be in final year of study in an approved teacher education program,
  • Student must have achieved a min. 3.0 GPA in the two semesters prior to final year,
  • Must have exhibited outstanding success and enthusiasm in life experiences prior to the final year of the program or graduate student who s life experiences prior to enrollment reveal the same traits  
2 Application

The Ulysses Turner Scholarship in Educational Curriculum and Instruction  

  • Must be enrolled in the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies within the Department of Educational Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on teaching from grades K-12,
  • Full-time undergraduate,
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5,
  • Demonstrated financial need

Named in honor of Dr. Jane S. Bray, who served as Dean of the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies from 2013-2020. This award recognizes students that exemplify what she worked so hard to promote in the DCEPS: excellence in academics, research and service, as well as demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.

  • Eligibility:
    • excellence in academics through being in good academic and disciplinary standing with a minimum overall GPA of 3.5,     
    • excellence in research through efforts to participate in scholarly activities such as research studies in collaboration with faculty, professional presentations, and publications,   
    • excellence in service through participation and leadership in efforts through student organizations, ODU, and the local community, and    
    • demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion through professional, academic, and/or community efforts
  • Requirements: student must be nominated by DCEPS faculty member, must have letter of support from DCEPS faculty member that addresses the nominees’ qualifications related to the criteria above, nominee’s UIN, nominee’s email address, nominee’s major
  • Number of Awards: 1

  • Eligibility:
    • student who has completed 24 credit hours,
    • good academic standing,
    • has experienced an unplanned hardship
  • Requirements: one-page personal statement addressing an unplanned hardship and career goals, three letters of recommendation not to exceed two from ODU faculty or professors and one from a personal reference

The Lorraine Buser Halsch ‘80 Memorial Scholarship Fund in Special Education

Established by Paul Halsch in memory of his late wife, Lorraine Buser Halsch, an Old Dominion University alumnus who majored in special education.

Sharon K. Mills Graduate Teaching Scholarship in Special Education
  • Recipient must be an ODU alumna/alumnus, preference will be given to a scholar who has taught in Virginia for a minimum of one year,
  • Recipient must be living in Virginia,
  • A renewing scholar may continue to receive the scholarship when following a military spouse to another state or duty station, as long as they are enrolled in ODU via an online distance learning program,
  • Preference will be given to a student enrolled in the Darden College of Education and Professional studies for either a Master’s Degree in Education, with Endorsement in Special Education: General Curriculum K-12 with an intent to teach students with mild disabilities, or a Ph.D. with a major in Education and a concentration in Special Education,
  • The scholarship is based on financial need and merit,
  • The recipient may be a full or part-time student,
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0,
  • Once the cost of tuition is met for the first student, and additional scholarship may be awarded

Graduate for less with a 25% tuition discount for eligible Virginia educators.

As part of our commitment to supporting the growth of Virginia’s educators, we are proud to offer a 25% tuition discount to eligible students.

To be eligible for the 25% partnership discount you must be registered for a graduate-level course (500-level or higher) within the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies at ODU and be currently employed by a Virginia Public School Division.

Apply Each Semester: Submit a quick application every term to receive the 25% tuition discount.

What’s Covered: The discount applies to tuition only - fees aren’t included.
