Telework in your Dominion
University Telework Policy 6202 allows designated employees to work at alternate work locations for all or part of their workweek in order to promote general work efficiencies. A teleworker is an employee who, under formal agreement with the university, performs his/her usual job duties in an alternate work location (with or without a specific telework schedule). Telework assignments do not change the conditions of employment or the total number of hours that employees are expected to work. Teleworkers must comply with all state and university policies.
To Start Teleworking:
If employee is approved to telework, the following must be completed before the employee may work from an alternate work site:
Read University Telework Policy 6202
Employee should review University Policy to ensure adherence and agreement to terms and conditions.
Complete Telework Agreement Form
Agreement must be signed by all necessary parties and submitted to HR for review and approval.
Setup Remote Computing
Follow the proper ITS remote computing procedures to setup a secure remote work environment.
Who is eligible to telework?
According to ODU's Telework Policy 6202, in making decisions about which positions are appropriate to designate or approve for telework, management, in consultation with HR, will analyze the duties of positions and how the work is performed. Generally, the types of positions that may be appropriate for telework are those that:
- Require independent work;
- Require little face-to-face interaction;
- Require concentration;
- Result in specific, measurable work products; and
- Can be monitored by output, not time spent doing the job.
These positions provide direct service or are place-specific. Due to their nature, these positions are ineligible for telework:
- Admissions Counselor
- Garage Keeper
- Grounds worker
- Housekeeping worker
- HVAC Tech
- Mail Clerk
- PM Mechanic
- Public Safety personnel (police officer, security officer, police dispatcher, etc.)
- Residence Hall Director
- Trades/Utilities Worker
- Switchboard Operator
Note: Human Resources will periodically review this list to determine appropriateness of eligibility. Positions not on this list will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
