What sets us apart?

Advocate and provide care for children suspected of being abused and neglected in Virginia's only comprehensive Child Abuse Program. Our fellows pursue careers as educators, clinicians and researchers, gaining experience by collaborating with our active research team and working with state and local organizations to develop prevention strategies and train fellow advocacy professionals in the community.

Become an expert witness, engage with a multidisciplinary team, provide medical services and become a well-rounded expert with the training offered at one of Virginia's leaders in child abuse services.

Where you'll train

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters

Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only freestanding children's hospital in Virginia. With 206 beds, it is the regional pediatric referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The hospital, a pediatric Level I trauma center, is home to the area's largest and most advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as the state's only acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. Trainees spend the length of their fellowship working with CHKD's Child Abuse Program, which offers comprehensive medical and mental health services to nearly 1,100 children per year.

Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner provides all forensic pathology services to Hampton Roads and works closely with CHKD's Child Abuse Program. Fellows rotate with the office in their first year and continue their longitudinal experience throughout the fellowship. Fellows participate in autopsies of child abuse cases, both on cases they have followed within the hospital and on cases where their first contact with the case is at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
