Welcome to the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program.

Launched in 2023, our fellowship is part of a major expansion of pediatric mental health care in Hampton Roads, based at CHKD, Virginia’s only freestanding children’s psychiatric hospital. This community-driven initiative is focused on improving access to high-quality care across a region known for its warm climate and vibrant arts scene.

The program offers:

  • Flexible, education-focused training with room for self-direction
  • Opportunities to serve children across a full continuum of care at CHKD’s new Children’s Pavilion
  • Clinical experiences that integrate biological, psychological, social, and structural perspectives

Since its inception, we’ve built a collaborative learning environment with exceptional faculty from across the country. Their expertise supports pediatric and general psychiatry residents, as well as a growing number of medical students exploring careers in child and adolescent psychiatry.

To foster connection and community, the mental health service line, to include attendings and fellows, hosts quarterly socials at local restaurants. These gatherings feature free food and offer a relaxed space to mingle, unwind, and build relationships outside of clinical settings.

And The Children's Pavilion at Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters

Children’s Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) and The Children’s Pavilion is Virginia's only freestanding children's hospital, featuring 206 pediatric beds and 60 child mental health beds. It serves as the regional referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina and operates as a Level I pediatric trauma center, housing the largest neonatal and pediatric intensive care units in the area. Approximately 60% of CHKD's patients have public insurance.

Children’s Pavilion was designed to provide comprehensive care to children. It houses several specialized inpatient psychiatric units, the partial hospitalization program, outpatient child psychiatry clinic and other specialties including primary care. All training sites are close together, maximizing time spent with patients and learning. Care is family-centered and interdisciplinary, provided in a welcoming environment.
