New name, same mission
We are proud to announce that Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) is now Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences Eastern Virginia Medical School at Old Dominion University. While our name has changed, our commitment to building a healthier community remains the same. Through our nationally recognized Graduate Medical Education programs, we continue to provide comprehensive, community-based training across multiple hospitals and clinics.

Where you'll train
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is Virginia's only freestanding, full-service pediatric hospital. As the regional referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina, our residents receive extensive general pediatric and subspecialty learning experiences within a community facility devoted solely to children. CHKD is, as a Level I pediatric trauma center, home to the area's largest and most advanced NICU and PICU, as well as the state's only acute inpatient rehabilitation unit.
CHKD Children's Pavilion
The 14-story tower Children's Pavilion expanded CHKD's mission to encompass mental health. Along with primary care and sports medicine outpatient services, the Pavilion has provided outpatient mental health care since April 25th, 2022 with inpatient psychiatric available later this year.
The Pavilion also offers unique features such as indoor and outdoor recreation areas, art and music zones, education and training rooms as well as room to grow.
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for EVMS, is home to the area's only Level I trauma center and burn trauma unit and the region's premier heart program. Its active cardiology, cardiac rehabilitation, sleep medicine, epilepsy and oncology programs, as well as its heart, lung, kidney and pancreas transplant programs, make Sentara Norfolk General an ideal place for residents to train. Residents rotate through routine newborn care and specialized care in Sentara Norfolk General's nurseries, attending high-risk deliveries, supporting families and participating in hands-on procedures with newborn and preterm infants.
'CHKD appealed to me as a mid-size program at a free-standing children's hospital with few fellows. I love the support and mentorship that we receive as residents from faculty, staff and each other, as well as having a wonderful group of people to work with every day.'

A supportive environment
Work-life balance is important during your residency, and we are committed to supporting our residents throughout their time with us. Through EVMS' Wellness Works program, our residents and fellows receive the same wellness resources as our faculty and staff.
In addition, our Resident Wellness program for residents and fellows gives you access to support groups, after-hours counseling services, running clubs, leadership coaching and more.
Promoting diversity and inclusion
Our training program diligently recruits diverse residents and esteems the unique value everyone adds to our residency family, our healthcare system and our community.
We believe medical training includes learning and teaching how to stand firm in opposing hatred and violence, thus empowering us to proudly serve Hampton Roads' diverse population, which includes minorities, economically disenfranchised individuals, transgender youth, immigrants and global refugees.
We know life happens, and we want you to be covered when it does. That's why we offer competitive benefits packages for our residents and fellows.
