Pediatric Hospital Medicine

Residents and students working with the Pediatric Hospital Medicine division will learn to provide patients with safe, efficient, quality medical care that addresses the longitudinal needs of patients and their families. Our vision is to become the preferred provider of quality inpatient general medical services to children and families in the Hampton Roads area and surrounding communities. This vision is carried out using the Clinical, Administration, Research, Education (CARE) model:

  • Clinical: CHKD hospitalists specialize in inpatient, non-intensive medical care of children. They provide comprehensive coverage for patients from admission through discharge, communicate routinely with primary care pediatricians to discuss diagnostic and treatment regimens and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Administration: Hospitalists are actively involved in hospital administrative efforts, including routine participation on safety, quality and electronic health committees. They work closely with our nursing and ancillary staff colleagues to practice evidence-based medicine and develop practical clinical algorithms.
  • Research: The Pediatric Hospital Medicine division is involved in several academic pursuits that include projects to examine discharge coordination, electronic communication, meningitis demographics and the treatment of inpatient asthma.
  • Education: There are routinely 3 to 4 medical students from EVMS on the ward team. Our hospitalists teach about 20 residents per year. They prepare several instructional sessions and encourage independent thought in the discovery and review of cutting-edge research. Members with the division have won several teaching awards.
