Building Access:Keys

ODU Facilities Management & Construction (FMC) is entrusted with the vital task of protecting the security of the Monarch community and property through the secure regulation of keys. For safety reasons, most campus facilities are kept locked by traditional metal keys and/or prox cards.

The process to request a metal key for offices, certain building entrances, and building masters is completely done ONLINE! Paper forms for key requests are not accepted.


Key Request Procedure:

1.) Submit Key Request Form

Login to xeapps.odu.edu/keyreq and submit the online form to request desired key.

  • Please only request access to areas for which there is a true business need.
  • Residence Hall keys are NOT handled through this system.

2.) Supervisor Approval

The employee's supervisor will receive, review, and approve the request online. Notifications will be sent via email.

3.) Processing & Pickup

FMC Approval & Processing:

After the supervisor approves the key, Facilities Management will evaluate the key request. If approved, the key will be processed.

Key Pickup:

When your key is ready, you can schedule an appointment to pick it up from Facilities Management (4401 Powhatan Ave.). Due to COVID-19 restrictions, an appointment is required.

The University Card Center issues official ODU ID's with smart technology to function as your access credentials on campus. ITS assigns access as requested through dooraccess@odu.edu.

Residence Hall Keys

Residence Hall keys are NOT handled in this system. Contact Housing & Residence Life for information about student keys.

Technology Classroom Access

For security purposes, all technology classroom doors are kept locked. The type of key request depends on the building. Learn more



Leaving the University?

If you are transferring jobs, leaving the university, or otherwise no longer need your keys, please return them directly to Facilities Management to avoid a charge.

Need Admin Access?

If you are an administrator who needs to regularly requests keys on behalf of other employees (whom you do not supervise), you may request admin access.



Key Holder's Agreement

All keyholders are expected to sign and abide by the following agreement:

  1. I understand that I have been issued the above listed key(s) on a temporary basis for use in the performance of my duties, job, or position and that I am personally responsible and accountable for the security and safekeeping of such key(s).

  2. I understand that key(s) issued to me will not be loaned to others and will not be duplicated under any circumstances.

  3. I will return all keys to the Facilities Management & Construction office upon my transfer or termination.

  4. I understand there will be a charge for each lost key.
