Redesigning Course Delivery

Old Dominion University is reimagining course design and delivery to reflect the evolving expectations of modern learners while empowering faculty to innovate with purpose. The guiding priorities – flexibility, intentionality, and innovation – ensure that academic excellence remains central as delivery models evolve.

Technology-Enhanced, On-Campus Courses

Technology-enhanced on-campus courses are intentionally designed – not just to use tools, but to create engaging, student-centered experiences. Opportunities include:

  • Technology paired with instructional strategies that foster interaction and engagement (e.g., interactive platforms, collaborative whiteboarding, and real-time annotation tools.);
  • Flipped classroom models that combine asynchronous preparation with real-time application (e.g., students review curated lecture materials and videos ahead of class, then apply learning through case studies or Ai-generated simulations during in-person sessions.);
  • XR and AR integration to support immersive and simulation-based learning (e.g., language translation with XR headsets, spatial simulations in environmental science or history, or training in immersive labs.); and
  • AI-supported content media creation, and collaborative digital tools. (e.g., faculty using generative AI for media generation, summaries, and designing collaborative assignments using integrated AI features and enhancements in Canvas.)

Accelerated Asynchronous Online Courses

  • All online courses are being redesigned into accelerated (typically 8-week), asynchronous formats to increase access, improve completion, and better serve a diverse student population, including adult learners, part-time students, and those balancing work or family responsibilities.

8-Week Course Initiative

By converting traditional 16-week courses into an accelerated 8-week format, we are creating more scheduling options and multiple entry points into programs each semester.
