Graphic Design Technology & Resources

Technology

The graphic design classrooms and production labs are housed in dedicated facilities in the Barry Arts Building. Our classrooms and labs provide access to state of the art tools and processes for producing work. The graphic design computer lab is equipped with Apple computers and industry standard software for print and digital production.

Upon completion of GDES 365 Basic Typography, students are required to purchase a Mac or PC laptop for upper level coursework. Educational discounts are available.

Required Equipment

Recommended Equipment

  • External USB-C hard drive

PC vs Mac

Macs are still the industry standard in the graphic design profession. An additional concern for students in the program is compatibility and workflow. All the external services and resources in the classrooms utilize the MacOS system. Students with a PC may encounter an additional layer of complication in their workflow. Finally, neither the graphic design faculty or staff offer support for PCs.

Professional and Student Organizations

The Graphic Design Club is a student group at Old Dominion University created to build a strong sense of community on campus by hosting presentations, workshops and field trips related to the design profession. The club also connects graphic design students with the local design community by networking with professional organizations like AIGA Hampton Roads, AAF Hampton Roads, and the Richmond Ad Club. The Graphic Design Club is open to all graphic design majors and alumni and does not require membership. For updates on upcoming events, join the Facebook group page or follow us on Instagram.

Professional Development

The graphic design program maintains an active schedule of visiting designers, exhibitions, and workshops to enhance students' educational experience. From visiting designers, students have the opportunity to learn formally and informally from a variety of local, national, and internationally-recognized figures in contemporary design.
