What is the Board of Visitors?

The Board of Visitors consists of 17 members who serve 4 year terms and areappointed by the Governor of Virginia. Members include 3 ODU alums, 3 non-residents of Virginia as well as business and community leaders. The board overseesvarious duties such as funding, rules and regulations, and appointing the President. Additionally, board members serve on subcommittees ranging from Executive,Academic and Research Advancement, Administration and Finance, UniversityAdvancement, Student Enhancement and Engagement, Audit and Compliance,Athletics, and Governance. What are the responsibilities of the position?

The student representative serves as the nonvoting, advisory board member from May2022 to May 2023 in a volunteer capacity. Responsibilities include presenting areport at four quarterly board meetings and attending regular meetings with theUniversity President, Vice President of SEES, and student leaders. The student isinvited to participate at campus events, committee meetings and speakingengagements. Further, the student is appointed to the SEES Student LeadershipCouncil, required to attend an SGA Senate meeting once per month and host 2interest meetings in the Spring term.

What is the application and interview process like?

Applications include three letters of recommendation, letter of intent, and resume.Applicants who meet the minimum requirements are interviewed by a committee. Thecommittee is made up of the Vice President of SEES, current BOV studentrepresentative and two staff members. Three finalists will be selected to interview infront of a subcommittee of the Board of Visitors. All three finalists will receive aleadership position (Student Representative to the BOV, Student Representative tothe State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, or SEES Student LeadershipCouncil member.)

What do you look for in a student representative?

Applicants are evaluated based on their campus involvement, academics(minimum 3.0 GPA), and leadership experience.

What makes a successful student representative?

The student must maintain an awareness of ongoing trends and issues withcampus and student life. Be able to convey the shared sentiments of MonarchNation. Maintain an awareness of higher education issues and trends bothwithin ODU and beyond. Promote an initiative each year. Previous areas includemental health, mentorship, promoting campus resources, and more.

What is the time commitment?

The position is a part-time role. Certain times of the year will be busier thanothers.
