Emergency Medicine Residency Educational Stipend

Emergency Medicine provides an educational stipend of $300 each year for each resident, which may be used for conference attendance, professional dues, books/journals or medical equipment.

The residency program currently pays for ACEP PEER Review and RoshReview subscriptions for all residents. In addition, the program pays for SonoSIM ultrasound training modules for all PGY1s.

Professional Organization Membership

It is important for residents to be exposed to, and involved in organized Emergency Medicine. We pay for membership in the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), the Virginia College of Emergency Physicians (VACEP), the Emergency Medicine Residents' Association (EMRA), and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) during your entire training. This also allows our residents to receive monthly issues of the Annals of Emergency Medicine and Academic Emergency Medicine.

Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Annual Meeting

Each year, Emergency Medicine sends all our PGY1s to the SAEM Annual Meeting. The department pays costs for travel to and from the meeting, registration, lodging, and meals. Attendance at this meeting provides our EM residents with exposure to cutting-edge research and new clinical information and a chance to interact with residents and faculty from other EM departments across the country.

Ultrasound Course

The department conducts a two-day Ultrasound Course for all PGY1 residents. Residents gain hands-on experience in the use of point of care ultrasound in the Emergency Department (ED). Topics covered include Trauma FAST exam, gallbladder, AAA, early pregnancy, cardiac and vascular access imaging. This course lays the groundwork for residents to attain a high level of confidence in using point of care ultrasound in the ED.

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Instructor Courses

Emergency Medicine will pay the registration fee for all PGY1 or PGY2 residents who successfully complete these courses.

Emergency Medicine Residency Vacation/Educational Leave

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) requires 46 weeks of residency training each year to be eligible for ABEM board certification.

Leave

Leave: The boards of individual specialties may have specific requirements for the amount of time spent in a training program. If an extended leave of absence, for any reason, is necessary, the trainee should discuss the effect of the leave on the requirements and duration of the training program. (Please see Leave Policy for additional leaves and information).

Vacation: Three weeks (15 scheduled workdays) of paid vacation per academic year are provided. Vacation requests must receive approval in advance from the program director, and trainees should check with the program director regarding program-specific policies. Vacation requests will not be approved during the first week of July or last week of June. The number of vacation days will be prorated if the GME trainee's start date is other than July 1.

Sick Leave: Sick leave may be authorized with full pay and benefits for a period not to exceed four weeks. Extended leaves require documentation from the treating physician. The number of sick days will be prorated if the GME trainee's start date is other than July 1 (Please see Leave Policy for additional leaves and information).

ACGME Parental, Caregiver, Medical Leave (ACGME Leave): In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) institutional requirements (effective July 1, 2022), at least once during the duration of the training program, GME will provide Trainees with a minimum of six (6) weeks of paid time away from training with one additional week of leave. The Trainee will be required to exhaust any available leave during the absence.

In the event the Trainee does not have a sufficient leave balance, the Trainee will receive additional paid leave, not to exceed six weeks with one additional week of leave. Trainees are responsible for checking with their specialty board and Program Director regarding the use of this leave and any related extension of training . (Please see Leave Policy for additional leaves and information).

The ACGME Parental (both birthing and non-birthing parent), Caregiver, Medical Leave can be used concurrently with other GME Leave Policies, if eligible. ACGME Leave is available to the Trainee on the first day of their employment. Trainees must notify the Program Director or their designee as soon as reasonably possible to allow time for adequate coverage of educational clinical care responsibilities. Trainees should contact Human Resources to initiate the leave. Trainees that exhaust leave through the ACGME Leave may request additional unpaid leave if necessary. This is a GME specific policy but may run concurrently with other available institutional leaves.

Holidays: Graduate Medical Education trainees are responsible for the clinical care of the patients within the educational program. To this end, trainees are not afforded the standard institutional holidays. The education committee of each individual training program has a set policy, which guides the provision of national, state and religious holidays.

Professional Leave: Subject to approval by the program director. (Please see Leave Policy for additional leaves and information).
