NOTE: TEST SCORES ARE REPORTED APPROXIMATELY 10 DAYS AFTER THE LAST DATE ON THE TESTING WINDOW. PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY

All endorsement areas require three years of full-time work experience. Report on Experience Forms must be completed by your employer.

Third-party or electronic transcripts will be accepted due to COVID-19. Official transcripts must come directly from your university registrar's office and email to careerswitcher@odu.edu. Graduates of foreign institutions must have their credentials evaluated.
Please see the VDOE evaluation policy for instructions and a list of evaluating agencies if your higher education credentials come from an institution outside the United States.

Every person seeking initial licensure or renewal of a license must provide evidence of completion of certification or training in

  • Emergency first aid
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • The use of automated external defibrillators (AED)

The certification or training program must be based on the current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

NEW Effective September 1, 2017, certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillators that is required of every person seeking initial licensure or renewal of a license as a teacher shall include hands-on practice of the skills necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

Extension of Hands-On CPR Waiver: The Superintendent of Public Instruction is granting an extension to the existing waiver that any individual seeking an initial license or renewal of licensure and who has completed all other components of training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillator shall be relieved of the requirement to have hands-on practice of the skills necessary to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation for the purpose of their licensure application until January 1, 2022.

Training on the indicators, interventions, and accommodations for dyslexia is provided through the Virginia Department of Education.

Once you have compiled all the materials associated with your Career Switcher Program application, please make copies of all materials for your own records. This will allow you to re-use these materials as you prepare job applications.

Once you have completed each item on this checklist (including supplementary items, if applicable), mail your application packet to our mailing address below. Once we receive your packet, we will contact you to schedule your formal interview.

The Virginia Department of Education requires official transcripts from each university you've attended.  Official transcripts must be sent directly from your University or an approved third party agency.  Official transcripts must be sent to careerswitcher@odu.edu

TLED 568. Language Acquisition and Reading for Students with Diverse Learning Needs. 3 Credits.
This course provides an overview of normal language development and language disorders which impact the acquisition of language-based curriculum skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and written expression. Emphasis is on instructional techniques to assist students with diverse learning needs to achieve reading and comprehension skills. Effective reading strategies and curricula for individuals with disabilities will also be reviewed.
