Interested in Studying Abroad?
We encourage all psychology students to consider incorporating study abroad into their academic experience. Studying abroad offers students the opportunity to earn international experience while completing coursework that can be applied toward degree requirements. Psychology students can complete coursework toward major requirements, as well as minor and general education requirements.
ODU offers a variety of program options, ranging from 10 days to a full academic year, so that students may choose the program that best fits their academic needs. Students can also select from a range of short term faculty-led programs offered over the spring and summer breaks. Psychology students interested in spending a semester or a full academic year abroad can choose from a variety affiliated programs or choose an exchange program with one of ODU's partner universities in countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Denmark and Ireland.
Students interested in a short-term program may consider PSYC 420: Cross Cultural Psychology in Italy. This study abroad program focuses on themes which are richly expressed in Italian culture: religion, food, fashion and art. Specifically, students delve into how Italian culture shapes and impacts Italian behavior, thoughts and emotions. The study abroad portion of this course takes place over Spring Break and is led by Ms. Jennifer Younkin, lecturer in the Department of Psychology.
Funding Your Experience
There are several scholarship opportunities that Psychology students should take advantage of to fund a study abroad experience. Students considering spending at least a semester studying abroad in the UK have the opportunity to apply for a competitive $2,000 scholarship to apply toward program expenses. There is also a $500 Dean's scholarship that eligible students can apply for. In many cases, financial aid can be used toward short term and/or semester options.
Steps to Start Your Journey Abroad
