Political Science & GeographyGeography Certificates

Environmental Resources and Policy

Environmental Resources Policy Certificate

The Certificate in Environmental Resources and Policy educates students in the distribution and accessibility of environmental resources (i.e. fresh water and fossil fuels). Students will gain knowledge of the scientific and ethical debates about environmental opportunities and constraints (e.g. renewable and nonrenewable energy production). Students will develop skills to apply environmental geography (i.e. tracking how environmental resources shape landscapes and societies) to the policymaking processes (i.e. coalition building and policy writing). Graduates will be prepared to conduct geographic analysis (i.e. spatial and temporal) of resource availability. Graduates will also be able to guide policy processes to account for ecological issues (e.g. climate change).

Geographic Information Science

The Geographic Information Science (GIS) certificate at Old Dominion University (ODU) provides an education program for students and professionals pursuing careers in geographic information systems, and related spatial technologies (remote sensing, global positioning systems (GPS), cartography, and spatial data handling and analysis).

Hazards and Emergency Management

Hazards Emergency Management

The Certificate in Hazards and Emergency Management educates students in disaster risk and contingency planning. Students will gain knowledge in hazard and vulnerability assessment. Students will develop skills to enhance response efforts and learn planning principles to build resilience to hazards (i.e. structural reinforcement and stormwater management). Graduates will be able to manage emergencies to meet the needs of populations in hazardous locations.

Spatial Analysis of Coastal Environments

The Certificate in Spatial Analysis of Coastal Environments (SpACE) provides an interdisciplinary program for students wishing to pursue careers in coastal management or research, remote sensing, or geographic information system (GIS) applications.

Urban Studies and Planning

ODU Education Building Urban Studies and Planning

The Certificate in Urban Studies and Planning educates students in the structure, distribution, and growth of urban landscapes. Students will gain knowledge in urban planning, city development, and human geography (e.g. the interactions between urban populations and locations that shape cultures and economies). Students will develop skills to apply social science principles to planning processes (i.e. for public service provision). Graduates will be prepared to assess land use plans from city to regional levels. Graduates will also be able to guide growth (i.e. from population pressure).
