The Heads Up Monarchs campaign encourages ODU Monarchs and community members traveling across campus on foot, bike, or by bus or car to keep their heads up and pay attention to their surroundings.

This is particularly important in shared road spaces (those supporting multiple modes of transportation) because of the additional types of interactions that can occur.

The campaign encourages Monarchs to keep their heads up in the following ways:

IN A CAR

  • Don't use your phone while driving!Using your phone to text, make phone calls, or other activities is dangerous!
  • Watch for pedestrians; particularly in cross walks, and near sidewalks.
  • Watch for people on bikes, e-scooters, or skateboards; they may be in bike lanes or in the drive lane. Become familiar with cycling signals (turn and breaking signals).

  • Wait away from the curb at bus stops (both Monarch Transit and HRT)
