The Peer Career Coach plays a vital role in supporting fellow students with career-related guidance while serving as a bridge between students and the Center for Career and Leadership Development (CCLD). This position offers hands-on training and work-based learning for experience in career coaching, marketing and outreach, and event coordination, contributing to the CCLD’s mission of fostering and developing career readiness among the student body. 

Position Title: Peer Career Coach

Pay Rate: $12.41-$15.41

Department: Center for Career and Leadership Development (CCLD)

Location: Old Dominion University-2202 Webb Student Center 

Hours: 10-15 hours/week (based on funding availability)

Schedule: Priority in staffing for Tuesday-Thursday from 10 am-3 pm to support Career Commons Drop-In hours. Additional hours can be served M-F from 8 am-5 pm.

  • Shadow experienced Peer Career Coaches to learn best practices. (Career & Self Development)
  • Conduct one-on-one peer coaching sessions. (Critical Thinking & Communication)
  • Guide students in using career resources and familiarize them with CCLD services. (Technology)
  • Support students in developing personalized strategies for resume and cover letter development, career exploration, and internship-job search strategies. (Teamwork & Critical Thinking, & Communication)
  • Make appropriate referrals to CCLD services and other university resources to ensure students receive comprehensive support. (Teamwork &  Professionalism)
  • Guide students using Handshake and LinkedIn basics. (Technology)
  • Assist with CCLD marketing efforts by distributing materials and promoting services. (Communication & Teamwork)
  • Attend mandatory training and professional development opportunities. (Professionalism and Career & Self Development)
  • Support event logistics for University, SEES, and CCLD-sponsored events. (Professionalism and Career & Self Development)
  • Maintain accurate records of student interactions in tracking systems. (Professionalism & Technology,) 

 

Qualification Expectations:

  • MUST BE A CURRENT STUDENT!
  • Enthusiasm for helping others and a willingness to learn.
  • No prior coaching experience is required.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating initiative, teachability, and organizational skills.
  • Previous leadership, mentorship, or coaching experience is a plus.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, and a commitment to upholding the values of the CCLD.
  • Act as a role model for career readiness and personal development.
  • Maintain regular office hours and contribute actively to CCLD’s mission and goals.
  • Engage fully in training and professional development opportunities provided by the CCLD.
