Position Title: Communications and Marketing Intern, ODU Department of Communication
and Theatre Arts
Location: Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, 3000 Batten Arts & Letters, 4401
Hampton Blvd.
Duration: Spring 2025 Semester
Hours: 10-15 hours per week for a total of 150 hours.
Start and End Date: January 6 through April 25, 2025
Supervisor: Deanna Gummer, Marketing Coordinator, ODU Department of Communication
and Theatre Arts
Compensation: $15 per hour through the Mellon Foundation Humanities Internship Stipend
About the Department of Communication and Theatre Arts in the College of Arts & Letters
The Department of Communication and Theatre Arts (COMM&TA) combines the creative, critical, and empirical dimensions of communication into expressive and analytical tools that prepare students for existing and emerging careers and to become engaged and empathetic participants in their relationships, communities, and in society. The department provides their majors with real-world opportunities to practice their skills in an entrepreneurial and experiential environment, in part through internships, senior experiences, and ePortfolios.
Position Overview
The Department of Communication and Theatre Arts Intern will work closely with the Department’s Marketing Coordinator to enhance the visibility of the department’s mission, programs, and initiatives through effective communication strategies. This position offers valuable hands-on experience in communications, content creation, social media management, event planning and promotion.
Key Responsibilities
Storytelling and Content Creation:
Develop engaging content on internships, for various platforms, utilizing “storytelling” to promote the many professional opportunities in COMM&TA. Create videos and use photography and graphics to amplify the story.
Social Media/Website Management:
Manage and grow the presence on social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn).
Collaborate with the COMM&TA marketing coordinator to update and maintain websites with current information, resources, and announcements in a user-friendly way.
Event Promotion:
Assist in promoting internship-related events and programs through digital and print media, ensuring high visibility and attendance.
Marketing Initiatives:
Develop marketing strategies and campaigns to reach diverse segments of the university community. Assist in the creation of marketing materials such as flyers, posters, digital displays and promotional giveaways.
Graphic Design:
Create visually appealing graphics for social media, newsletters, and promotional materials using tools like Canva or Adobe Creative Suite.
Data Collection and Analysis:
Collect data on the effectiveness of outreach efforts, social engagement, and marketing campaigns.
Assist in analyzing data to value the impact of various initiatives and identify areas for improvement.
Qualifications
Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in
Humanities: Art History (but not Art Education), African American Studies, Asian Studies,
English, History, Media Studies & Communication (but not Strategic Communication),
Philosophy and Religious Studies, Women’s and Gender Studies, and World Languages and
Cultures. The successful intern will enroll in their department’s for-credit internship course
(e.g. COMM 368, ENGL 368) or UNIV 068. The ideal candidate has:
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Proficiency in social media platforms and basic knowledge of social media analytics.
● Experience with graphic design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) is a plus.
● Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities.
● Photography and videography skills are desirable but not required.
● Prior experience in event planning, marketing, or communications is desirable but not
required.
