I write to share the news that Mark Fravel Jr., Professor Emeritus of Educational Curriculum and Instruction, passed on September 21, 2017.

Professor Fravel received his bachelor's degree from Rollins College, master's degree from the University of Florida, Certificate of Advanced Studies from Florida Atlantic and his Ph.D. from Wayne State University. He spent most of his career as a Social Studies Professor in the College of Education from 1972- 1997, and started his career in Education in 1955. While at Old Dominion University, he taught a variety of doctoral-level courses in Curriculum and Instruction and for the Elementary and Secondary Education Program designed for licensed teachers.

Professor Fravel's service extended outside the university community. In 1985, he served as the President on the National Association of State Boards of Education. He also served as the Vice-President committee chairman on the Virginia Board of Education, and the Virginia Councils of Social Studies.

Professor Fravel was a proud combat veteran, Sgt. 1/C, in the Korean War from 1949-1952. His love of country was lifelong. He was a 33rd degree mason of the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine.

Professor Fravel was born on Cleveland, Ohio, was a longtime resident of Chesapeake, VA, and retired in Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is survived by his wife Jo Ann (Babb), his daughter Deborah and son Mark, and six grandchildren.

Sincerely,
Dr. Jane S. Bray
