Memorandum of Understanding Between Old Dominion University & Colorado Southern University

This is an example of an MOU with a fictional university.  It is meant to demonstrate how MOUs can be constructed.  Please see How to Build an MOU for more details.

This program agreement offers students majoring in History or Humanities or minoring in History at Colorado Southern University (CSU) the opportunity to earn both a bachelor’s degree from CSU and a Master of Arts (MA) in History from Old Dominion University (ODU).

Students in the program attend CSU but can eventually take up to two graduate level classes at ODU that will count toward both their undergraduate and graduate degrees in an accelerated program.  Upon meeting certain requirements the student will also be automatically admitted to the MA in History at ODU.

The program supports both institutions in recruiting exceptional students that hope to complete their both the bachelor’s and the MA degrees in an accelerated format. The program will prepare students for careers in government, non-profit work, teaching, museum and archival professions, and further graduate study in law, history, and other humanities fields.

  1. Students attempting to enter the program must have a 3.3 minimum GPA, have completed at least 90 undergraduate credit hours, have completed 32 credit hours in residence at CSU.  Students must also be either a History or Humanities major at CSU, or a minor in history with 12 credit hours in history courses at CSU.  Students with an academic integrity violation confirmed by ODU’s Office of Student Accountability and Academic Integrity or the equivalent office at CSU may not be allowed to participate.

  1. Students can demonstrate their interest at point during their studies at CSU by contacting the Graduate Program Director in History at ODU.  Students can be nominated by the Departments of History and Humanities at CSU, but a nomination is not required.

  1. Students who demonstrate interest will need a single letter of recommendation from a CSU faculty member, preferably one in the Departments of History or Humanities.  The letter should address the recommender’s assessment of the student’s suitability for graduate work in history.  Students will also need to submit an official CSU transcript.

  1. Students who meet the minimum requirements for admission and who submit a letter of recommendation will not need to submit a formal application to ODU.  If approved for the program, they will be automatically admitted to the MA in History as a degree-seeking student.

  1. The requirements to take the GRE, submit multiple letters of recommendation, submit a statement of purpose, and pay the standard application fee will be waived.

  1. Students admitted to the program may take up to 6 credit hours for both undergraduate credit at CSU and graduate credit in the MA at ODU.  However, taking these accelerated courses is not required for admission.

  1. The MA in History requires 3 undergraduate credit hours in historical methods as a prerequisite for the program.  ODU accepts CSU’s HIST 301: Historical Research Methods or ODU’s HIST 201: Historical Methods to satisfy this requirement.  Students may also present evidence of having taken an equivalent course from another institution.

  1. Students admitted to the program can take any colloquium course offered at the 600-level while still attending CSU.

  1. Students will consult with the Graduate Program Director when selecting available graduate courses in each semester.

  1. Upon completing the undergraduate degree, a final official CSU transcript should be sent to the Graduate Program Director.  The GPA requirement of 3.3 will be maintained upon completion.

  1. The student is required to follow all ODU policies, procedures, and deadlines while enrolled at Old Dominion University.

  1. Students shall pay all applicable tuition and fees to each institution.

Both ODU and CSU will commit to marketing and advertising the program to ensure the program’s success.  Equal and shared responsibility is necessary to recruit motivated students who wish to accelerate the completion of their graduate and undergraduate degrees.

  1. Both universities will promote visibility of the agreement and its requirements and procedures through online marketing.  The Department of History at ODU will present CSU as a partner school on its program website.  The Departments of History and Humanities at CSU will present ODU as a partner school on their program websites.  Neither institution will use the logos or trademarks of the other institution without permission.

  1. ODU will send representatives to CSU to present to classes and/or meet with faculty and interested students to promote the agreement at least once per year.  The Department of History at ODU will welcome representatives and students from CSU to visit the ODU campus and learn about the graduate program as required.

  1. Printed materials related to the recruitment and advertising of this agreement shall be approved by both ODU and CSU.  Such materials must be reviewed by both parties prior to dissemination, publishing, printing, or posting.  Once reviewed, both parties will commit to distributing materials widely to promote internal and external communication.

  1. This agreement will be in effect for five years from the date of ratification.  Both institutions will institute a review of the agreement one year in advance and determine whether to renew.

  1. The agreement may be terminated at any time by either institution with three months advance notice.  The appropriate signing official (below) or their designee or successor must be formally notified.

  1. Any proposed changes to requirements, courses, or program procedures must be declared to the other institution one year in advance.

  1. Parties agree to remain in good standing with all regulatory and accrediting bodies.  If either party loses such standing, they must inform the other party within 30 days of receiving such notice.

  1. This agreement does not preclude either ODU or CSU from forming similar agreements or Memorandums of Understanding with other institutions.

  1. This agreement does not meet the SACSCOC definition of a Cooperative Academic Agreement, or that of Dual or Joint Academic Awards.  As a result, no substantive change notifications are required to be submitted to SACSCOC.
