Dear Monarch Community:

Yesterday, Milwaukee Bucks basketball players became the first professional team to boycott their game after the senseless shooting of Jacob Blake by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Just as these courageous players did, we must continue to stand against violence, inequities and injustice.

This summer, hundreds of Monarchs joined Old Dominion University graduate student Mufu Taiwo, who led a March for Justice on our campus to protest the murders of African Americans. Together, we stood up as an antiracist, diverse and inclusive community committed to building a more just society.

The broader discussions on social justice and equality issues we held virtually this spring and summer will continue into the fall semester and beyond. We invite you - our faculty, staff and students - to extend your commitment by raising your awareness of diversity issues and playing an active role in dismantling systemic racism in our culture, society and educational systems.

Together, we can build a more welcoming and inclusive community. As headlines remind us every day, our country has much work to do and so do we.

Sincerely,

John R. Broderick, President
