At Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University we believe that fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care should not have a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. We believe that an educational program should be tailored to meet each fellow's needs and career goals. In addition to our three-year Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship, we also offer a two-year Critical Care fellowship track for Internal Medicine or Emergency Medicine physicians. We are one of only a handful of programs to offer three-year tracks in Nephrology/Critical Care and Infectious Diseases/Critical Care.
Additionally, we have been approved as a pilot site for a combined three-year fellowship in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. Fellows have flexibility in their rotation schedules to pursue individual interests such as certification in critical care echocardiography, honing clinical skills through additional elective time, participating in research, or pursuing certification in global health. Whatever your career goals may be, we can help you get there.
You will have the opportunity to work with leaders in the field, including Dr. Alexander Levitov, Professor of Internal Medicine, who developed the first nationally recognized guidelines on ultrasound use in critical care, and Dr. Michael Eggert, nationally recognized expert in pulmonary hypertension, and director of the region's only accredited pulmonary hypertension center. Conduct research with NIH-funded research teams at Old Dominion University.
Where You'll Train
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, the primary teaching hospital for Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, is home to the area's only Level I trauma center and burn trauma unit, the region's premier heart program, and a Urology program rated "high-performing" by U.S. News & World Report.
Residents round on inpatient consult and surgery patients, receiving daily assignments that cover a spectrum of procedures and match residents' experience with the complexity of cases. Residents also see patients in our weekly half-day outpatient clinic at Sentara Norfolk General.
Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters is the only freestanding children's hospital in Virginia. With 206 beds, it is the regional pediatric referral center for coastal Virginia and northeastern North Carolina. The hospital, a pediatric Level I trauma center, is home to the area's largest and most advanced neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as the state's only acute inpatient rehabilitation unit. Residents complete inpatient rotations at the hospital and manage pediatric outpatient care in a weekly clinic.
Fellows complete their continuity clinic in an ambulatory facility at Nephrology Associates of Tidewater, housed at Fort Norfolk Plaza. On average, the fellow will perform two new patient work-ups and see four patients for follow-up during one half-day clinic.
Faculty will train fellows on the management of patients with various renal diseases in the ambulatory setting. Fellows also complete their research rotations at Nephrology Associates of Tidewater. Fellows can elect a basic science or clinical research project, and a faculty member will serve as their research mentor.
Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is a 276-bed acute care facility offering specialized, tertiary services and the region's only Level III trauma center. It houses the Sentara Heart Center and Sleep Center and provides specialty care in orthopedics, neurosurgery, and thoracic and colorectal surgery. Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is one of the region's accredited stroke centers. Our residents rotate through this facility for a month during each of their four training years.
Inova Fairfax Hospital is an 833-bed, nationally recognized regional medical center serving the Washington, D.C., metro area. As Inova's flagship hospital, it is consistently named one of U.S. News & World Report's top hospitals in Virginia and in the Washington, D.C., area. Trainees perform their lung transplant rotation at this facility.
