The Moon affects far more than just ocean tides; it has had a major influence on the length of the day, the seasons, the evolution and behavior of animals, and even on the weather. In this lecture, Neil F. Comins, professor of astronomy at the University of Maine and author of 21 books (including What if the Moon Didn't Exist and What if the Earth had two moons?) will explore the staggering consequences for Earth and for ourselves if our Moon had never formed.

Neil F. Comins graduated from Cornell University and received his Ph.D. in theoretical general relativity from University College, Cardiff, Wales. His early work was cited by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar in his 1983 Nobel Prize lecture. Since 1978, Comins has been on the faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Maine. He has appeared over 150 times on radio and television and is the author of 21 books, including What if the Moon Didn't Exist?, What if the Earth Had two moons?, The Traveler's Guide to Space, and many editions of the textbook Discovering the Universe. He lives with his wife, Sue, in Bangor, Maine.
