In recognition of the 100th Anniversary of Black History Month, the Office of Faculty Recruitment and Retention and the Coalition of Black Faculty and Administrators invite you to an evening presentation and conversation with Dr. Marvin T. Chiles, Associate Professor of African American History and Director of African American Studies. This event offers time to reflect on the past century of Black History Month and consider where we go from here together.
Marvin T. Chiles is the Associate Professor of African American History and Director of African American Studies at ODU. Chiles specializes in 19th and 20th century Southern, urban, and sport history and culture. He is well published with 10 peer reviewed articles and 3 monographs; the most recent being Boo Williams and the Transformation of Youth Basketball, debuting in June 2026. He has also been featured in documentaries, the most known being the Emmy winning "How the Monuments Came Down" project about the history of Richmond's Monument Avenue. Chiles is currently working on both a documentary and limited television series about Hampton basketball legend Boo Williams and AAU Basketball.
