Biography
Dr. Emily Goodman-Scott is an Associate Professor, Assistant Chair, Graduate Program Director, and School Counseling Coordinator in the department of Counseling and Human Services at Old Dominion University, in Virginia. She previously worked as a school counselor, special education teacher, and in several mental health settings counseling youth.
She is passionate about researching school counseling topics, including Multi-tiered Systems of Support (PBIS/RTI); preparation, practices, and current trends; elementary school counseling; and counseling children with exceptionalities. She's published approximately 35 articles in national, peer-reviewed journals, including Professional School Counseling, Journal of Counseling and Development, and Counselor Education and Supervision. She was the lead editor on the book, "A School Counselor's Guide to MTSS" (2019, Routledge) and lead author on the book "Making MTSS Work" (2020, ASCA).
She teaches both master's and doctoral courses in ODU's CACREP accredited program, a recipient of the national ACES Outstanding Counselor Education program award.
Dr. Goodman-Scott served for 10 years as a board member for the Virginia School Counselor Association, including as Chair/President (2019-2020), and currently as Co-Chair of the Research Committee. She is also on the board for the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling (ACAC), a division of the American Counseling Association, serving as president (2020-2021). She co-coordinates a national group of school counseling faculty (through ACES- the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision), advised ODU's chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, and represented Virginia at several White House School Counseling Convenings. Further, she is on the editorial review board for the Professional School Counseling journal and the Journal of Child and Adolescent Counseling. She enjoys conducting national and state speaking: keynotes, trainings, coaching and consulting, as well as partnerships with school districts.
Finally, Dr. Goodman-Scott is a proud recipient of a 2021 Research award from the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling (AARC), the 2020 Research Award from the American Counseling Association (ACA), a 2020 Spring President Broderick's Diversity Champion Award, the Insiders Business: "Top 40 Under 40" recognition, the 2018 Outstanding Faculty recipient from the ODU Chapter of Chi Sigma Iota, and the 2017 SACES Outstanding Pre-Tenure Counselor Educator Award.
She earned both a Ph.D. and M.A.Ed. from Virginia Tech and a B.S. from James Madison University. Dr. Goodman-Scott is a licensed school counselor (VA), a Licensed Professional Counselor (VA), a Nationally Certified Counselor and School Counselor, and an Approved Clinical Supervisor.
