Join the Institute for Jewish Studies and Interfaith Understanding and ODU Hillel as we learn from Israeli photographer and IDF reservist soldier Shahar Dekel. We will have the opportunity to discuss his experiences, including those as a resident of Kibbutz Nahal Oz, and to hear about the creative process behind his powerful photographic exhibit, "Through My Eyes: A War Diary."
Dekel will offer an evening lecture at the United Jewish Federation of Tidewater that same day, but this is an opportunity for a more intimate conversation with him at ODU.
Dekel’s lens captures the mundane — moments of shaving, showering, and brushing teeth — and the profound occasions such as marriages and prayers. He offers a portrayal of shared humanity. In his own words, he captures the essence of this unfiltered reality, asserting: “We are first people, and then we are soldiers. The moments that I love are the moments that show not the heroic soldier, nor the tank, but the humanity inside the war.” He hopes these photos will “make the world see through my eyes. We are just simple people who want to go back home to our friends, children, and wives.”
