The CFD has three important events next week: 1) Who are our Students?, 2) Tenure and Academic Freedom, & 3) Research Reorientation. Please register here: https://cfd.odu.edu/events/.
Pedagogical literature tells us that we need to better understand our students’ backgrounds and perspectives, but do we really know who our students are? Old Dominion University has a diverse student population with nearly 50% first generation college students. This discussion will explore aggregate data from the past five years to better grasp ODU student demographics and how they differ by modality and student type. Understanding our students can help us develop better strategies to meet student needs and improve student success. Join Director of Academic Analytics, Tyler Miller-Gordon and the CFD's Annette Finley-Croswhite, Kristal Kinloch-Taylor, and M'hammed Abdous, for this ZOOM event—October 21 from 2-3PM.
On October 22 the Center for Faculty Development is co-sponsoring an event with the ODU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors addressing tenure and academic freedom.
Our distinguished speakers will be Ruth Triplett, Professor and Chair of Sociology and Criminal Justice, Dennis Gregory, Associate Professor and Graduate Program Director in the Higher Education Graduate Program, and Tatyana Lobova, University Distinguished Teacher and Master Lecturer in Biological Sciences. Both Drs. Gregory and Lobova are members of the University Faculty Senate.
De-mystifying Tenure- A Three-Part Series
How relevant in tenure today? Join us for a three-part series focused on demystifying tenure and its place in the academy. Part 1 begins with “Tenure and Academic Freedom.” This panel discussion and Q & A explores the 1940 American Association of University Professors’ “Statement of Principles on Academic Freedom and Tenure” which continues to be the standard definition of academic freedom in the United States today. Parts 2 and 3 will occur in spring 2025.
The event is available face-to-face in the Library Commons 1310-1311 and on ZOOM. It will occur from 12:30-1:30PM. Light refreshments will be provided for attendees of the in-person section.
Research Reorientation will be hosted by Jackie Stein, Director of Research Development, on October 24 from 12:30-1:30pm on ZOOM. This online presentation is a recap of information covered in the Research Orientation for new faculty. It is intended for ODU faculty who want to refocus on research after a hiatus or anyone who would like an update on accessing research support available at ODU, including grant submission, commercialization, and compliance.
