Dr. Jennifer Fish Endowed Scholarship for Social Justice

A new scholarship, renewable each year, will help students in the College of Arts & Letters fund their studies.

The Dr. Jennifer Fish Endowed Scholarship for Social Justice was endowed by an anonymous donor and named for the former chair of the Department of Women's Studies. It is for students majoring in, or intending to major in, Women's Studies or African American and African Studies. This scholarship funds students for consecutive years to promote degree completion and longer-term support. It has been established with a focus on first generation students to provide support over the entire course of the undergraduate degree.

"This scholarship captures my core belief in the potential to impact the course of students' lives through direct support over the entire journey to degree completion," Fish said. "I am deeply honored by this gift and the recognition of social justice at the center of both academic study and applied action to improve our world."

Criteria include:

  • Applicant must be an undergraduate student majoring in, or intending to major in Women's Studies or African American & African Studies within the College of Arts & Letters
  • First preference will be given to first-generation students
  • Preference will be given to a student whose work or volunteer activities serve humanitarian causes or causes of social justice, broadly defined, and as assessed by the leadership and faculty of the Department of Women's Students and the Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.
  • The scholarship will be based on financial need as determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid at ODU.

Applications are due by March 1.
