Nurse Executive (Nursing Practice, D.N.P.)

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree will provide additional education for nurses in upper-level administration and executive roles. The Nurse Executive role prepares top level nurse executives for leadership positions in a health system. The program outcomes are consistent with the American Organization of Nursing Leaders (AONL) guidelines for nurse executive practice. The course content focuses on executive leadership skills, working with vulnerable populations, fiscal and human resource management, quality magnet achievement, emerging technology, and organizational research in clinical issues. Students participate in executive internships throughout the program in their home area.

What is Nurse Executive DNP at ODU like?

NURS 810:
Leadership in Complex Systems and Organizations


This course will focus on the leadership that comprises two types: informal and formal leadership. Competencies will include communication, knowledge of health care environment, leadership, professionalism, and business skills.

NURS 812:
Evidence-Based Management for Quality Healthcare


The focus of the course is on the development of systems processes to ensure quality healthcare. The evidence-based model will be applied to organizational systems.

NURS 814:
Competitive Resource Design and Utilization


This course focuses on the competitive design and utilization of organizational and human resources. Emphasis wiil be placed on the strategic process to ensure that resources are applied in ways to ensure high-quality care and excellent patient outcomes. The course will cover the business models for effective financial and personnel management of healthcare organizations. Analysis of the costs of care and quality of care will be performed.

What are the requirements to apply for Nurse Executive DNP at ODU?

Students entering the Doctor of Nursing Practice program in Nurse Executive DNP should meet the minimum university admission requirements (Graduate Admission)

  • Obtain and complete the ODU Graduate application online. Do not send application materials to the School of Nursing. All application materials must be completed by the posted deadline for consideration for each concentration area

  • Please request three references as indicated on the application form using the forms supplied. The references should be former supervisors and faculty

  • You will need to request that official copies of all your transcripts be sent to graduate admissions

  • Submission of a goal statement is required. Your goal statement should speak specifically to the concentration area to which you are applying

  • Submit a current resume that includes all work and education experience, as well as any scholarship or professional activity

Scholarship


There is one scholarship available to Nurse Executive Post-Master’s D.N.P students. A competitive process is used to select the qualified award recipient after completion of two semesters in the program.
