Helping to prevent, control and minimize the risk of injuries and loss due to the vehicle accidents.

The ODU Police Department has partnered with the Office of Risk Management to design a driver improvement program that provides the information, instructions and training that will:

  • enable vehicle operators to avoid situations that may compromise their safety or the safety of those in the vicinity of the vehicle
  • ensure vehicle operators avoid damaging the vehicle or any of its accessories

The ODU Police Department facilitates two types of Driver Improvement Training courses: the DMV Training program, which is open to the public for $60/attendee; and the ODU Employee Training which is a condensed training (based on DMV program) and offered at no charge to ODU employees, such as those required to take it to drive state vehicles.

DMV Training

  • Cost: $60 per attendee
  • Time: 1 day (8 hours)
  • Open to public (ODU or non-ODU)
  • Safe driving points may be awarded

ODU Employee Training

  • Cost: Free for ODU employees
  • Time: Half day (4 hours)
  • Only for ODU Faculty/Staff/Students; Required for any employees driving state vehicles
  • No points awarded (voluntary)

  • Demerit points are assigned when you are convicted of a traffic violation and remain valid for two years from the date you commit the offense.
  • Safe driving points are assigned for each full calendar year that you hold a valid Virginia driver's license and drive without any violations or suspensions. In some cases, you may also earn safe driving points by completing a driver improvement clinic. Annual safe driving points are awarded in early April of each year for the previous calendar year.
