Assistant Professor of Physics - Center for Accelerator Science

Applications are invited for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Physics to join the growing Center for Accelerator Science (CAS) at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, Virginia with an expected start date of Fall 2014. The ODU Physics Department (http://sci.odu.edu/physics/) has strong research groups in experimental and theoretical nuclear and particle physics, experimental and theoretical atomic and few-body physics, accelerator physics, theoretical condensed matter physics, materials science and geophysics and is one of seven degree-granting units in the College of Sciences offering B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The department has 20 tenured or tenure-track faculty and five special appointment “Jefferson Lab Professors” and is supported by substantial external, peer-reviewed research grant support as well as state funds. Thirteen faculty members are APS Fellows. A vibrant graduate program includes 50 graduate students and more than 80 undergraduate majors.

CAS was created in December of 2008 as a joint initiative between ODU and the nearby Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) to train the next generation of accelerator scientists through teaching and research. CAS (http://odu.edu/sci/research/cas) currently focuses on super-conducting RF cavities design, materials, and processes; accelerator design; and high-performance computer simulations of particle accelerators. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in accelerator, particle, or nuclear physics, or a related field and have demonstrated ability in, or a strong potential for, excellence in both university teaching and academic research. Strong preference will be given to candidates with experience in accelerator science, especially those candidates with a research plan that is synergistic with or directly related to the current focus areas of CAS. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to the growth of CAS through involvement in ongoing activities as well as obtaining external grant funding for initiating new lines of research, to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in physics and to supervise undergraduates and graduate students in research.

Old Dominion University is a state-supported Carnegie Doctoral/Research Extensive institution with more than 24,000 students and over 720 full-time faculty.
