Welcome! At the Community Music Division (CMD), we make it easy for everyone to pick up an instrument and learn to play!
We believe it's never too late to make the priceless investment in a musical education. It's learning to last a lifetime!
Please send an email to the Community Music Division at oducmd@odu.edu with the following information.
- Name and age of person interested in lessons.
- Instrument you would like to study.
- Describe your experience level.
- Name of the instructor/instructors of interest. We cannot guarantee admittance per instructor.
- session date you want to start lessons.
You'll receive an email from the CMD Administrative Staff within 1-3 business days connecting you to an instructor. Please note that instructors have limited space in their studios. Not all requests can be honored but we'll do our best to get you with your first choice.
CMD has an outstanding staff of degreed private and group instructors who specialize in their music discipline. Most are active performers and teachers in the Hampton Roads community and surrounding areas. The challenges of COVID-19 were met by providing a completely virtual learning environment. Their experience, knowledge and passion for teaching make being a CMD student well worth it. Take a moment to read through the Instructor Biographies at the link below to see who a good fit may be to lead you on your musical journey.

How To Register
Accessing your Account
- Log-in. Faculty, Students and Alumni of ODU will already have a MIDAS account. Please sign-in to your account. Parent/Guardians that are faculty, students or alumni of ODU may use the Manage Members feature to register their child with their account. Multiple members may be added, meaning One Cart, One Checkout. This is helpful for families interested in registering multiple students at the same time.
- Create a new account. You will need to create a new account. Check that the email you provided is correct. You will receive an email with instructions to finish setting up your MIDAS account. This is the account used as a universal sign-in for all ODU systems. Subsequent registrations will require this.
Registering for your course
- Search by Instructor. When using course search, input the Surname (Last Name) of the student’s instructor in the Keyword field. This will isolate a search with all courses currently available with the instructor. If you wish to narrow down the courses further to either Private Lessons or Group Classes, there is a Category filter; you may choose either “Music Lessons, Private” or “Group Music Classes” to narrow your search further.
- Click on the course you want to register for.
Checkout
- Once added to your cart, you can continue to add items to your cart or proceed to checkout. When checking out, it is important to note that you will need to complete the payment information in a timely fashion or it will time out.
If you need additional help
- Proceed to IT Help Desk at ODU for assistance. They are equipped to assist students and parents with technical issues and concerns for registration.
- IT Help Desk will need the name of the Student, the Student’s UIN, and their MIDAS ID. If you need assistance finding this information due to an incomplete account set-up, you or your assigned instructor may request this information from the CMD Office by email.
