The Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) is a re-design in the structure of faculty development, critical thinking, student learning initiatives and faculty well-being at ODU. The CFE will focus on enhancing faculty excellence and success as well as fostering strategic initiatives to advance faculty scholarship, innovation, and impact.
Quality Enhancement Plan
This program is intended to address information fluency by increasing students' ability to read critically. Since critical reading is an essential vehicle for evaluating information, solving problems, and creatively integrating knowledge into a wide range of contexts to achieve information fluency, faculty workshops are held each spring and summer to cultivate these critical reading abilities in students.
Office of Faculty Recruitment and Well-Being
Through workshops, professional development opportunities, community-building initiatives, and well-being-focused programming, the office works to create an environment where faculty can thrive personally and professionally.
Student Experience Project
The Student Experience Project at ODU is a Community of Practice of faculty who come together to create classroom contexts that support student motivation, engagement, and belonging. Community of Practice participants engage in asynchronous and synchronous training and discussions over the course of a summer and academic year to learn how to design motivationally supportive classroom climates. The program focuses on four design elements: 1) syllabus revision, 2) “wise” feedback to students, 3) building an "identity safe" course climate, and 4) formative assessment for instructors.
New Faculty Success Program
The New Faculty Success Program (NFSP) is a cohort-style program that meets monthly throughout the academic year. Each session will enable participants to: personally connect with a small group of new faculty, discuss the content of the assigned National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) core curriculum webinar, and interact with a faculty panel on issues specific to ODU. The NFSP offers the opportunity to build relationships with other recent ODU hires and to have questions answered by experienced faculty. Participants are invited to engage with NCFDD curriculum to complement the monthly discussions about best practices for success at ODU.
Adjunct Faculty Liaison
The Adjunct Liaison (non-instructional part-time faculty) serves as a bridge between the CFE and Old Dominion University’s (ODU) adjunct faculty community. The role is meant to raise awareness about the needs of part-time faculty as well as foster the belonging and wellbeing of all faculty. The role is two-fold, focusing on Information Sharing (serving as a dedicated resource and point person for adjuncts) and Information Gathering (collecting information to better understand the needs of part-time faculty).

International Travel or Research Stipend Application
In hopes of encouraging international collaboration and removing barriers to publishing research that appeals to a global audience, the Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE) will award 5-10 stipends to ODU faculty members in the amount of $500-1000 each per academic year. Faculty can apply for an international travel or research stipend (but not both or a combination of the two) and no faculty will be awarded more than one stipend in a given academic year.
External Service/Leadership Training Grant Awarded to Faculty NACE Fellows
Faculty (all including adjuncts) can apply for grants to help them feel fulfilled in their professional lives, in their research or their health and well-being goals. Get a personal trainer and track your progress with health tools, go to an auxiliary conference or book fest, make a short film linked to your field or passion, get an instrument tuned, set up a mini-writing retreat in your back porch for the summer. Get a little leg up finding joy in your work and in balancing your work-life.
