ODU Mathematics FestivalFall 2021 Scavenger Hunt

Math is Everywhere Scavenger Hunt

When:

Now through January 11, 2022!

What:

ODU MathFest is organizing a scavenger hunt across Hampton Roads so students and their families and find that Math is Everywhere in our community. Overall pre-registration is not required, but different locations do require pre-purchased tickets. Students will receive a passport at their first location.

Where:

At each of the participating location below, participants will be able to collect some MathFest goodies (while supplies last), a math activity, and have their event passport stamped. Students will also have the opportunity to be entered into a drawing for one of three Kids Fire Pro tablets by scanning a QR code at each site.

While the MathFest goodies and activity materials are free, participants should be prepared to pay admission at each location and abide by all rules and regulations the facilities have set forth.


Children's Museum of Virginia

General Information:

The Children's Museum of Virginia features math-related activities in their STEM Studio. Stop by the STEM Studio to pick up your MathFest goodies, get your passport stamped, and engage with other fun STEM activities!

Where to Find MathFest Goodies:

Visit the STEM Studio on Saturdays and Sundays (except December 25) from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 2:15 to 3:45 p.m. on the second floor of the museum.

Visit Information:

December 11-12: Come on down—it's time for BRAIN GAMES! Stacking, sorting, and measuring all in puzzles and games. You'll never know you're practicing math skills!

December 18-19: KEVA planks are wooden blocks that match in size and shape and allow for stacking and building without glue or connectors. KEVA is a mnemonic or acronym. It stands for Knowledge, Exploration, and Visual Arts.

Covid-19 policies: Timed admission tickets are required, and masks are required for everyone 2 years and older.

Mariners' Museum and Park

General Information:

At The Mariners' Museum, you can complete an activity that lets you dive right into their mission, which is connecting people to one another through our shared maritime heritage. The Museum is filled with fascinating stories, captured in priceless artifacts that celebrate the spirit of the open sea.

In this activity, students will problem solve to find the proper conditions for the preservation of maritime artifacts. Students will walk away with a deeper knowledge of the important work the Museum does and how they are connected to the world's waters.

Visit Information:

Admission to the Museum is $1 per person. MathFest students will enjoy free admission.

The first 100 students to participate at The Mariners' Museum and Park will receive a FREE Membership. Details will be included in your packet when you arrive!

Nauticus & The Battleship Wisconsin

General Information:

Nauticus features an activity that corresponds to their mission to benefit their community through education, impactful experiences, and sharing access to maritime resources. In this activity, students will use their problem solving skills to scale down a brownie recipe that makes enough for a battleship so they can make it at home.

Where to Find MathFest Goodies:

Ask for a goody bag at the Shark Lab on the 3rd floor and have your passport stamped.

Covid-19 policies: In accordance with City of Norfolk guidelines, face coverings are encouraged for all visitors while inside the facility, regardless of vaccination status.

In support of a touch-free payment process, online ticket purchases are encouraged. Additional hand sanitizing stations are located throughout Nauticus and on the Battleship. We have increased cleaning protocols throughout the campus.

Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop - SOLD OUT

General Information:

The Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop features a unique opportunity for students to build a wooden boat model.

Tidewater Wooden Boat Workshop is nonprofit charitable and educational organization that uses wooden boatbuilding and other nautical activities to help disadvantaged youth in Hampton Roads develop the essential life skills that lead to a successful future.


Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center

General Information:

The Virginia Aquarium features an activity that inspires participants to learn about animals in support of their mission to to inspire conservation of the marine environment through education, research, and sustainable practices. In this activity, students will use their critical thinking skills to compare the frequencies at which different animals flap their fins and more!

Virginia Living Museum

General Information:

The Virginia Living Museum features an activity that corresponds to their mission to connect people to nature through educational experiences that promote conservation. In this activity, students will estimate how much otters eat and how much it costs to feed them!

Virginia Zoo - SOLD OUT

General Information:

The Virginia Zoo features an activity that corresponds to their mission inspire a passion for nature and conservation action at home and around the world. In this activity, students will use their critical thinking skills to size up enclosures and food quantities for the Zoolumination giant inflatable animals at the zoo.




Frequently Asked Questions

What age range is the Scavenger Hunt for?

The event is designed for 3rd through 8th grade students.

How can my child get an event passport?

Your child will receive a passport at the first location you visit.

How do I enter in the tablet giveaway?

There is a QR code to scan on the activity sheet for each location that will direct you to a form. If there is no activity sheet, the person on site will have a flyer you can scan. You many submit one entry per child, per site.
