The Commonwealth of Virginia grants authority to the Board of Visitors to establish rules and regulations for the University. Board of Visitors policies are reviewed and approved by the Board. These policies govern the Board or interaction with the Board; satisfy a requirement from a governmental entity for a policy that must be approved by the Board; ensure basic rights and obligations to constituencies within the University; govern the award of degrees, emeritus/emerita designation, recognition of related corporations, and naming; or are generated by the Board of Visitors or a member thereof.
Recent Updates to Board Policies
At the meeting held June 12, 2026, the Board reviewed and reaffirmed Board Policy 1107, Section: Participation in Board of Visitors Meetings by Electronic Means of Communication in the Event of Emergency or Personal Matter or Certain Disabilities as required by Virginia Code § 2.2-3708.3 (D).

The Legacy EVMS Board policies 1701-1710 have been incorporated into the policies above and, effective July 1, 2026, are rescinded as standalone policies by the Board of Visitors. Notwithstanding the rescission of these policies, the Board directs that any appointment, promotion, or tenure decision, grievance, appeal, investigation, hearing, disciplinary matter, or other due process proceeding initiated under one of these policies prior to July 1, 2026, shall continue to be governed by the terms of the rescinded policy as though it remains in full force and effect.
