Robert Broermann ’80 ‘83 

Robert A. (Rob) Broermann was appointed to the Board of Visitors on July 1, 2026 by Governor Abigail Spanberger. He retired in 2025 as Executive Vice President and CFO of Sentara Health, a position he held since 2001.  At that time, Sentara was a successful fully integrated 5-hospital health system generating $1 billion in annual operating revenues.  At the time of Rob’s retirement, Sentara had grown to an organization consisting of 12 hospitals, 1,300 employed physicians and advanced practice professionals, 400 total sites of care and a health plan providing coverage for 1.1 million members.  Sentara’s total operating revenues exceeded $13 billion, and it employed more than 32,000 people.  Sentara is the largest healthcare organization in Virginia and serves markets in North Carolina and Florida as well. Rob was highly active in Sentara’s growth, leading the Mergers and Acquisition function for many years.  He also led numerous public financing transactions and oversaw the management of multi-billion-dollar investment portfolios.  From an operational standpoint, the Financial Leadership Team of every Sentara operating division and every centralized Finance operation reported up to Rob.  In total, the Finance Division of Sentara consisted of approx. 2,500 team members. 

Rob joined Sentara in 1998 through the merger of Sentara and Tidewater Healthcare, where he had served as CFO since 1993.  Prior to dedicating his career to healthcare, Rob was a practicing CPA, serving clients in a variety of industries including healthcare, banking, construction, and media.

Rob has served on numerous Boards of Directors, including a previous term on the ODU Board of Visitors.  He is currently the Board Chair of the United Way of Virginia and past Board Chair of the United Way of South Hampton Roads and the Virginia Beach Education Foundation.

Rob earned a B.S. in Business Administration (Accounting) and his MBA from Old Dominion University.
