Kira Kindley, an ODU senior studying Women's Studies as well as Physics, earns praise from the Virginian Pilot for starting "Our Own Podcast". Carrying on the legacy of Our Own Community Press, a Norfolk-based newspaper for gay and lesbian readers published from the 1970s-1990s, Kindley has released two episodes and is researching future subjects, with the goal of releasing a new one every other week. Stories will focus on events, social groups and locations, with an emphasis on everyday life.

Kindley hopes the podcast inspires listeners to dig through their attics for old issues of Our Own or other LGBT newspapers. She hopes it will help people reconnect with history - or learn about it for the first time.

"If you don't have those stories, LGBT kids don't know what that everyday life is like - they don't know it's possible," Kindley said.
