EVMS Research Society (ERS)

ERS partners with EVMS MSR to assist EVMS students in preparing their research for presentation anywhere, including at ODU events such as the ODU Knowledge Expo.

Jonathan D. Seigel 98 Medical Student Research Symposium: The inaugural Jonathan D. Siegel, MD '98, Medical Student Research Symposium at Lewis Hall celebrated the dedication and achievements of medical students presenting their research. This event marked the culmination of a year-long revitalization of the EVMS Medical Student Research (MSR) program, designed to foster innovation and discovery. Students shared their work with peers, faculty, and staff, gaining valuable experience in research presentation. The symposium, named in honor of Dr. Siegel for his unwavering support, featured a keynote address by him. Natascha Heise, PhD, received the Outstanding Faculty Mentorship Award, while the Gynecological Surgery Group earned the Outstanding Contribution Award. MSR aims to make this event an annual tradition.

The EVMS Research Society (ERS) was founded in 2020 with the mission to connect interested students with research opportunities. The ERS assists with the process of exploring opportunities for personal projects, showcasing research results, and networking with faculty and staff mentors at EVMS.

The ERS serves as the main coordinating body for all research interest groups. ERS leaders are liaisons for all research-specific student feedback, and ERS House Heads help students and organizations with specific research interests plan events and find opportunities. ERS works closely with MSR to continue to improve and expand research infrastructure at EVMS, as well as increase student engagement with research initiatives and specialty interest groups.

To allow for more flexible support and personalized resources for students interested in research, starting in 2026 ERS introduced a new organizational structure. In addition to senior leadership, House Heads were introduced, with each Head in charge of coordinating with interest groups and faculty within their domain or specialties. The new Houses are: Cardiopulmonary and Critical Care, Neuroscience and Behavioral, Pediatrics and Community Health, Surgical and Procedural, and Cancer and Immunology.

We foster a collaborative community where members can connect with fellow students, faculty, and researchers to exchange ideas, share expertise, and form interdisciplinary research teams.

Club leaders regularly organize social events, such as research club dinners, networking receptions, or team-building activities, to create a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for students to interact with each other and with faculty members. House heads partner with interest groups and EVMS physicians for monthly journal clubs at which students can discuss and familiarize themselves with relevant research in their areas of interest.
