Faculty development is a lifelong journey. We provide programs, resources, and collaborative learning opportunities that support faculty at every career stage—from onboarding and early career development to leadership, educational excellence, scholarship, and professional well-being.

Whether you are looking to strengthen your teaching, prepare for promotion, develop leadership skills, build meaningful professional relationships, or explore new ideas in academic medicine, FAPD offers opportunities designed to help you succeed.

Get Started

Whether you're joining Virginia Health Sciences for the first time or exploring new opportunities throughout your career, FAPD provides resources to help you navigate the academic environment and build a strong foundation for success.

Programs Include:

The Faculty Forward Series is a professional development initiative designed to support faculty members at every stage of their academic career. Recognizing that faculty are the institution's most valuable asset, the series provides timely, relevant, and practical learning experiences that help participants excel as educators, clinicians, researchers, mentors, and leaders. Grounded in the principles of curiosity, creativity, commitment, and excellence, Faculty Forward equips faculty with the knowledge, skills, and strategies needed to navigate the evolving landscape of academic medicine and health sciences.

Through interactive workshops, panel discussions, expert presentations, and peer learning opportunities, the series addresses topics that contribute to both individual career success and institutional excellence. Sessions focus on areas such as leadership development, career advancement, mentorship, promotion and tenure, work-life integration, professional identity formation, scholarly productivity, and emerging trends in academic medicine.

New Faculty Orientation is offered at least twice each year to welcome new faculty to the School of Medicine and introduce them to key institutional resources, programs, and leadership. The orientation provides an overview of areas such as continuing medical education, research, library services, clinical education, and career and professional development, while also providing an opportunity to connect with fellow new faculty and members of the School’s leadership team.
