HACE Presents Staff Awards, Elects New Officers

Old Dominion University's HACE (Hourly and Classified Employee) Association chapter held its annual luncheon on May 17 to induct new officers, distribute awards and celebrate milestones within the organization.

Elaine Pearson, associate vice president for academic affairs, served as the event's guest speaker. During her address, Pearson told the crowd about her journey to ODU. Pearson is a first- generation college graduate and reached the highest military ranking in her family. She served as a lt. cmdr. in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

Pearson said throughout her career she included faith, education, professional development, personal goals and networking. She encouraged the crowd to embrace values and always seek opportunities for advancement.

"Always demonstrate strong ethics, integrity and moral judgement," Pearson said. "Dress for the job that you want and not the job that you have."

Following the address, two HACE members were recognized with awards. The Staff Member of the Year Award went to David Figgs, from ODU's College of Health Sciences; and the Rookie Staff Member of the Year Award went to Brian Klotz of ODU's Information Technology Services.
