Day of Giving Campaign Raises More Than $185,000

By Harry Minium

Old Dominion University's Day of Giving, in which students, alumni and friends of the University and others are asked to give generously over a 24-hour period to help support ODU, was again a major success.

The 24-hour giving period on March 19 was supported by more than 738 donors who contributed $185,207 during the campaign.

"We are so grateful to our students, alumni and friends of the University for their generosity," said Alonzo Brandon, vice president for University Advancement. "We will use these resources to enrich the educational experience for so many students and help our faculty provide students with a world-class education."

The ODU Day of Giving was an online challenge issued to alumni, parents, students and friends of the University. The online effort is pushed by prominent ODU alumni such as ESPN sportscaster Jay Harris.

Much of the money raised is used to provide scholarships. For many students, as little as $1,000 can close the gap between resources they have and the cost of going to school.

The funds also help purchase needed equipment and the creation of endowments to help top students attend ODU and help retain and hire high-quality faculty.

ODU used email, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn to promote the effort as well as advertising on Pilotonline.com and the video board at Nauticus in downtown Norfollk.
