Board of Visitors: Honors College Renamed, Student Representative Selected

By Jon Cawley

Old Dominion University's Honors College has been named the Patricia and Douglas Perry Honors College.

At its spring meeting, the University's Board of Visitors unanimously approved the new name in recognition of the Perrys' gift to the college, which includes the creation of the John and Kate Broderick Opportunity Scholarship. During his report to the board, President John R. Broderick said $30 million has been raised since December 2017 for the fundraising initiative he announced last summer during his State of the University address. To date, $100 million of the University's $250 million goal has been raised.

President Broderick also announced that board member Ross Mugler, who serves as commissioner of the revenue for the City of Hampton, was recently appointed to the board of directors for the Association of Governing Boards.

President Broderick said it was the first time a representative from ODU had been appointed to the national board, which focuses on governance in higher education.

In other business, the board unanimously appointed a new student representative to the Board of Visitors. Rafia Haq will serve a one-year term. She is double majoring in computer science and psychology.

Haq also serves as the director of finance for the Student Government Association, outreach chair for Old Dominion's Society of Women Engineers chapter and a member of the University's Academic Integrity Council.

In a letter of recommendation, Meredith Doxey, adjunct assistant professor of psychology, characterized Haq as a "rare and amazing" student. "Rafia is one of my top 10 students I have taught."

Additionally, Rawn Boulden and Andrea Brzoska will serve as student representatives to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia's Student Advisory Council and Old Dominion's Student Engagement & Enrollment Services Leadership Council, respectively.
