ODU Offers Free Tax Services to the Community

By Noell Saunders

Old Dominion University's Managerial Accounting and Auditing Club and members of the National Association of Black Accountants will offer free tax assistance to the public from Feb. 19 to April 17.

Help will be provided 3 to 7 p.m. Mondays and Fridays in Room 1041 of Constant Hall. Pay parking is located across the street in the 49th Street garage or the visitors parking lot.

Doug Ziegenfuss, professor in Department of Accounting, and senior lecturer Robert Cromich are spearheading the event, which is a partnership with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. VITA is the Internal Revenue Service's community-focused volunteer initiative serving low- to moderate-income taxpayers.

"The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is a great way for ODU to give back to an underserved segment of the local community while giving ODU students the opportunity to obtain some valuable experience interviewing and preparing simple tax returns," Ziegenfuss said.

The University's Managerial Accounting and Auditing Club includes the student chapters of five professional accounting organizations. The club, which is open to any interested accounting student, offers professional programs under the sponsorship of the Institute of Management Accountants, the Institute of Internal Auditors, the Association of Government Accountants, the National Association of Black Accountants and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners.

Volunteers who are local accountants or students are needed. All volunteers must complete online IRS training courses to become certified. Accounting majors are preferred. For more information, contact Cromich at rcromich@odu.edu.
