Old Dominion University psychology students have built on of the world's top Psi Chi International Honor Society chapters by working together to create a strong, active community that connects their peers with research, service, graduate study, and future careers in psychology.

The chapter earned the prestigious Model Chapter Award from Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, designating it as one of the best.

The award places the University’s chapter among just 45 chapters selected from more than 1,100 chapters worldwide, recognizing exceptional achievement in leadership, scholarship, service and professional development. The honor reflects a year of dedicated work by student leaders and faculty mentors who have fostered an active chapter committed to academic excellence and meaningful engagement both on and off campus.

For chapter president Kathryn Loschert, a senior in psychology, the recognition represents the collective efforts of students who have embraced opportunities to grow as scholars, leaders and future professionals.

“Receiving the Model Chapter Award is a recognition of our hard work and shows that our club exceeds the standards set by the organization," Kathryn said. " As a chapter, we have worked incredibly hard to create a space for students to meet others with an interest in psychology and provide resources for educational, professional and career development.”

The chapter's success was supported by faculty mentors Ivan Ash, Ph.D., Christopher Sanders, Ph.D., and Matthew Espinosa, Ph.D., whose guidance helped students build a chapter that extends well beyond traditional academic honor society activities.

"This recognition reflects the incredible collaboration between our students and faculty mentors," said George Noell, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Psychology. "This pouring of themselves into a shared commitment for excellence is what makes our Psi Chi chapter one of the premier chapters.” Students do not have to look far to find that level of excellence. It is here at Old Dominion University.

Psi Chi membership is open to high-achieving psychology students who meet academic eligibility requirements. While membership recognizes academic excellence, the organization also emphasizes experiential learning through research, leadership development, networking and service.

Throughout the academic year, the University's chapter hosts programs that connect students with faculty researchers, graduate students and practicing psychologists. Members participate in professional development workshops and community outreach initiatives that encourage collaboration across disciplines while strengthening their understanding of psychology in practice.

These experiences help students develop skills that extend beyond the classroom, including leadership, communication and critical thinking. Members also gain valuable exposure to research and graduate education, helping them prepare for advanced study and careers in psychology and related fields.

The Model Chapter Award recognizes chapters that demonstrate sustained excellence across multiple areas, including chapter programming, service, membership engagement and support for student success. Earning the distinction places the University's chapter among an elite group of Psi Chi organizations making significant contributions to their campuses and the psychology profession.

For students interested in psychology, the award also highlights the opportunities available through Old Dominion University's Department of Psychology, where academic achievement is paired with hands-on experiences that prepare graduates to make an impact in their communities and their careers.

As the chapter celebrates this recognition, its leaders remain focused on expanding opportunities for future members and continuing the tradition of excellence that earned their place amongst the top Psi Chi chapters.
