Dear Faculty and Staff:
This afternoon and into the evening, our University experienced a severe and sudden weather event that brought intense rainfall in a very short period of time, totaling approximately 4.6 inches as measured at our main campus weather station. This resulted in significant localized flooding and hazards across our grounds and surrounding roadways. First and foremost, I am writing to check in on each of you and express my deepest appreciation for how our community responded with extraordinary care, composure, and resilience under difficult circumstances.
The impact of this severe storm on our campus infrastructure has been extensive. We experienced notable flooding in several facilities, including Gornto Hall, the Lions Child Study Center, and Spong Hall. We also experienced water intrusion in Perry Library and Webb University Center, as well as leased properties, such as the Innovation Research Park, the Institute for Coastal Adaptation and Resilience, and the Police Department. In addition to building impacts, flooded streets led to hazardous driving conditions with impassable roads and stalled vehicles.
In the face of these rapidly evolving challenges, the character and strength of the Monarch Nation were on full display. I want to extend my lasting gratitude to the employees who promptly reported rising waters, navigated hazardous areas safely, and immediately stepped forward to assist colleagues and others in need. I also want to acknowledge those who patiently waited out the worst of the storm and its immediate aftermath at Chartway Arena before beginning their evening commutes. Your concern for each other, flexibility, and patience helped keep our campus safe during a truly chaotic and uncertain time.
Our emergency operations, first responders, facilities, and information technology teams have been actively assessing the damage, securing affected areas, and beginning the remediation and restoration processes, along with direct involvement from external companies for their expertise and services. The care and well-being of our community remain our highest priority as we address the impacts of this storm. Additionally, we have opened our parking garages to help our neighbors who need a dry and safe space to park their vehicles.
A detailed University announcement will be sent later this evening in our continued effort to provide additional information regarding ongoing cleanup and building statuses. Thank you once again for your care, dedication, and resilience!
