A Message from the Vice President

Dr. Ken Fridley, Vice President for the Division of Research and Economic Development.

Kenneth J. Fridley, Ph.D.

Old Dominion University is a forward-focused, comprehensive public research institution with an R1 research enterprise and established areas of national strength. As Virginia’s coastal research university, we are building on that momentum through distinctive capabilities, partnerships and expertise that address regional, national and global challenges.

Our research strategy focuses on four core areas where ODU brings distinctive expertise and opportunity: national security, maritime systems, health innovations and coastal resilience. These focus areas are strengthened by cross-cutting capabilities in modeling and simulation, artificial intelligence and machine learning, autonomous and networked systems, computational and data science, and cybersecurity and network security.

What distinguishes ODU is how these capabilities come together. Our researchers work across disciplines and alongside federal agencies, national laboratories, industry and other partners to address complex challenges, translate discovery into practical solutions and develop the workforce that will carry innovation forward.

On behalf of the Division, we look forward to exploring what we can accomplish together.

Kenneth J. Fridley, Ph.D.

Vice President for Research & Economic Development
