A community united in grief and strength

Tragedy struck our main campus when a lone gunman entered Constant Hall and opened fire in a classroom on March 12, 2026. We join together to pay tribute to our fellow Monarch who was lost and the two students who were injured. We recognize every member of our campus and community who was deeply impacted by this senseless act of violence — and we acknowledge the swift, direct response from campus, city, state, and federal officers and emergency responders.

"The grace and unity that our campus community demonstrated during this tragic incident and in the hours that followed have been a source of strength."

On this page you will find official statements from university leadership, resources for those affected, information about the ongoing investigation, and details about how the Monarch Nation is coming together in the days ahead.

In Memoriam

Brandon Shah

Lt. Col. Brandon A. Shah

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Brandon A. Shah

Monarch. Soldier. Mentor. Husband. Father. Friend.

Lt. Col. Shah exemplified what it means to be a Monarch — as a student and alumnus, a brave soldier, an engaging mentor, a revered teacher, and an exemplary leader. Above all, he cherished his most important roles: husband, father, and friend. As we grieve, we draw on the determination, resilience, and strength that he modeled throughout his life.

Lieutenant Colonel (LTC) Brandon A. Shah is a native of Virginia, an alumnus and commissionee of Old Dominion University (ODU), and the current Professor of Military Science (PMS) at ODU’s Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC). Brandon enlisted into the Army in 2003 as an Aviation Operations Specialist. While enlisted, he obtained the rank of Sergeant before transitioning. On completing his enlisted service, which included service in the Active Duty Army, Army Reserves, and Virginia Army National Guard, Brandon graduated from Old Dominion University. Since his enlisted service to present, he has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and a rotation to Atlantic Resolve.
