This elective is designed to familiarize the student with the Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) at CHKD and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) and to participate in the management of neonates under direct supervision of the neonatal-perinatal medicine faculty. Students will be able to apply the basic sciences (physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology) to the care of sick neonates. This elective is designed to allow the student to become more knowledgeable about daily patient care management in the NICU, how to work with a multidisciplinary care team, and learn how to work with parents of sick infants. Students will also have an opportunity to attend deliveries of NICU infants at SNGH and participate in initial resuscitation and stabilization.
