SmithTech: School of Computer Science, Innovation and Design
SmithTech is a College Partnership Laboratory School between Chesapeake Public Schools and Old Dominion University. SmithTech focuses on the integration of Computer Science standards into core content classes and enhanced electives to provide hands-on, innovative learning opportunities for students in this rapidly growing field. SmithTech is hosted at Oscar Smith Middle School in Chesapeake, VA and hosts grades 6th through 8th.
Our Mission
The mission of SmithTech: School of Computer Science, Innovation, and Design is to empower middle school students through transformative learning opportunities and experiences. With an innovative focus on computer science principles, we cultivate curiosity, empowering students to actively shape their educational journeys as computer scientists. As SmithTech scholars, inquirers, and contributors, our students take proactive ownership of their learning, embodying the attributes that define our dynamic educational community.
Our mission extends beyond the classroom, aiming to positively impact workforce development by nurturing a diverse pool of talent equipped with the skills demanded by the evolving technology sector. Our vision is to empower middle school students by providing a pioneering program of study that not only equips them to excel in high school coursework, but also prepares them to confidently navigate the technology talent pipeline. SmithTech envisions a future where students, armed with technical prowess acquired through an integrated and design thinking framework, contribute meaningfully to the ever-evolving world of computer science.

Important Information
In the event that a greater number of students apply than there are spaces available, a random lottery system will be used to determine student acceptance into the program. Students who are not accepted into the program through the lottery process will be placed on a waitlist. Parents will be contacted regarding their position on the waitlist and will be notified in the event of an opening for their child throughout the school year.
