Strome Strides: Students in the Spotlight

Katie Ellett

One of my favorite duties as the Social Media Manager is collaborating and communicating with an outside digital design company, and then watching my ideas come to life. I've been able to use the knowledge I learned in class, such as the best times to post for each platform to help increase customer engagement. This internship has been an incredible experience that has prepared me for a successful future in marketing.

I assisted Cathy in altering business plans in these unprecedented times during the pandemic. I enjoyed every minute of working alongside Cathy and learned so much. We worked well together, and she has asked me to continue working part time for Lewis Communications Group after my internship is over! I am looking forward to this opportunity.

Throughout my journey I stayed true to what I wanted and who I am. At the beginning of your journey you need to know what is accepted to you. If you can, don't settle. Internships give you experience, so an opportunity to learn is better than no opportunity. Start early, keep a running resume, and take on leadership opportunities. It is not as scary as it seems. NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK. If you don't know how just start a conversation. If you are shy ask someone you trust to go with you. If you aren't shy pull a shy person along with you. Helping others doesn't cause you to lose an opportunity it helps everyone to gain one. What is meant for you is meant for you. Keep working hard because at the end of the day you know you did everything in your power. Also, build a relationship with your Professors, they are a great resource.

This coming fall semester, I am most looking forward to starting courses in my new minor: Civil Engineering Technology, where I will be studying the in's and the outs of development projects (RE Finance & Economics Major). My longtime girlfriend will also be transferring in from Tidewater Community College (I also transferred in through the TCC to ODU program) and I am very excited that she will get to experience the wonderful opportunities, connections, and education provided by Old Dominion.
